EQUALITY

Equality, diversity and inclusion

The people we support and the people we employ come from many backgrounds. Care that ignores that is not person-centred, whatever else it is.

We work within the Equality Act 2010, which protects people from discrimination on the basis of nine protected characteristics: age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation.

For a care provider this is practical rather than declaratory. It shapes how support plans are written, how staff are matched to the people they support, how food and routines are arranged, how communication needs are met, and how we recruit.

THE PEOPLE WE SUPPORT

Inclusive support

Support plans record what matters to someone, including cultural and religious practice, dietary requirements, language and communication needs, and preferences about who provides personal care.

We aim to meet requests about the gender of care staff where they relate to dignity, religious observance or previous experience, and we will say honestly when we cannot rather than agreeing and failing.

Accessible information is part of this. Where someone needs information in another format or another language, that is a reasonable adjustment rather than a favour.

In Practice

OUR WORKFORCE

Equality in employment

We recruit, train and promote on the basis of merit and the requirements of the role. Applicants and staff are not disadvantaged by any protected characteristic, and we make reasonable adjustments at every stage of employment, including at interview.

Our workforce includes people who have relocated to the United Kingdom to work in care. We expect them to be treated with the same respect as any other colleague, and we treat exploitation of migrant workers as a safeguarding matter. Our Modern Slavery Statement sets out the checks that support this.

Discrimination, harassment and victimisation are disciplinary matters. Anyone can raise a concern, including anonymously, without it affecting their employment.
