Specialist transport

Specialist Transport Services

Planned, risk-assessed and person-centred transport support for people who need more than a driver.

Journeys are arranged around the person, their communication and their support needs, with trained escorts where required and clear handover at both ends.

Governance

How Journeys Are Governed

The same governance that applies to care applies to travel.

How we plan

Planning Every Journey

Three steps sit behind every arrangement, whether it is a single journey or a regular pattern.

  1. 1Understand the Person and JourneyWe gather what matters: communication, support needs, mobility, equipment and what the journey involves.
  2. 2Agree the Travel and Handover PlanRoute, timings, escort arrangements, equipment and handover at both ends are agreed and recorded.
  3. 3Review Communication and Any ChangesJourneys are reviewed, and changes to needs, timings or arrangements are communicated and recorded.

No. Specialist Transport is a planned, pre-arranged service. It is not an emergency ambulance service and should not be used in an emergency. In an emergency, call 999.

Who travels with the person?

Trained support escorts travel with the person where this is agreed as part of the arrangement. The number and type of escort is set out in the travel plan.

Can you transport wheelchair users?

Yes, where suitable accessible transport is available and the arrangement has been agreed in advance. Equipment and securing arrangements are checked as part of planning.

How far in advance do journeys need to be booked?

Journeys are planned in advance so that risk assessment, escort arrangements and handover can be agreed. Timescales depend on the journey and current availability.
